10. Passing the Peace Baton to Young People

Japan has never been involved in war for 78 years since the end of the war.  I think that it is thanks to Article 9 of the Constitution.

Article 9, Section 1: Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.

Section 2In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.

However, if we do nothing from now, the peaceful world will not continue.  I want young people to think seriously about how we will be able to maintain the present-day peaceful world.  I want each and every one of them to think about and take action about what they can do to make this world without war and without nuclear weapons.  I say to young people whenever I give them my testimony, “I am passing the peace baton to you.”  I hope that those who take the baton think for themselves about how they should pass it on to others.
