5. Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims (Hiroshima City of Peace Memorial Monument)

Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims (Hiroshima City of Peace Memorial Monument)

Rest in Peace.
Awake from time to time
Remind us of our promise.
See Hiroshima' s wish reach the rest of the world.
Rest in peace.
Then
See whether we neglect what we have to do.
Awake from time to time.

Explanation

This monument was designed after a clay figure of an ancient house.
Register books are placed with the names of the A-bomb victims in the stone chest in the center of the monument. On August 6th every year, the names of the A-bomb survivors who died over the past year are added in the book. On August 6th, 2006, one book with the words “Many Unknown” was added.

Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims (Hiroshima City of Peace Memorial Monument)

The inscription reads: “Rest in Peace; For We Shall Not Repeat the Evil.” The wording is a pledge that all human beings should pray for the peace of the A-bomb victims and never repeat the evil. Both composing and inscribing were done by Hiroshima University professor, Tadayoshi Saiga(1894-1961), an authority on classical inscriptions.

Location : Peace Memorial Park, Naka-ku
