Arteries of Japan, steam locomotives,
Railroad men, people' s heroes,
Rain or snow
You kept sustaining Japan without rest,
As a foundation of the country.
Here, lie in your eternal rest.

Explanation

National Railway Workers Monument

The inscription on the monument reads:

Shoot not Heaven,
But war clouds.
Shoot not people,
But the calamity of war.
Sleeping in the A-bombed Hiroshima are
Souls of the unknown,
Spirits of National Railroad.
Eyes of the souls see,
Hands of the spirits grasp
Peace and the future.
