47. Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch Monument

Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch Monument

If we were separated because of your transfer,
We would have promised a reunion,
Saying bye for now.
You have gone without farewell.
The dove is the symbol of our pledge.

Explanation

Located 380 m from the hypocenter, the Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch was exposed to the A-bombing. As it was a solid building and the A-bomb was dropped before the start of business, the shutters on the 1st and 2nd floor were closed, and only the 3rd floor was burned and destroyed by the A-bomb.
On August 8, business was resumed, as the staff coped with contingencies quickly and efficiently. In March, 1992, the Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch Building was donated to the City of Hiroshima, as they moved to a new building in Moto-machi. It is now not only preserved as one of the buildings which withstood the A-bombing, but is also used by citizens for cultural and art exhibits.
