9. Postal Services' Workers Monument (Hiroshima Communication Bureau)

Postal Services' Workers Monument (Hiroshima Communication Bureau)

Letters from fathers or brothers at the front,
Censored and almost every word blackened,
Only with signatures--they were good news.
Postmen, sometimes against their will, delivered
Draft cards called akagami.
You, postmen, also ascended to heaven

Explanation

Among them were 288 from the Hiroshima Post Office, as well as the staff of West General Communications Bureau, Hiroshima Communications Bureau, Hiroshima Communications Hospital, Hiroshima Postal Savings Bureau and other post offices in Hiroshima.

Although the Hiroshima Communications Hospital, 1.4 km from the hypocenter, was greatly damaged by the bomb, the buildings barely escaped the spreading fire. Staff started rescue work two days after the bombing, using 100 tatami mats as beds, which had been previously removed to rural areas.
