Explanation
Hesaka is some six km north of the hypocenter. At the Hesaka Branch of the Hiroshima First Military Hospital, which commandeered the Hesaka National Primary School buildings, the staff engaged in rescue and medical treatment for victims, in cooperation with villagers, regardless of being military or civilian.
About 600 dead bodies were cremated with pine oil left over from military supply and firewood gathered by villagers.
The ashes were temporarily buried here, and a gate pillar of the cavalry site was used for the monument with a Shinto priest' s calligraphy on it.
In April, 1959, the ashes were moved to the Memorial Mound in Peace Memorial Park. The monument still stands to remind us of those days and to let us pray for peace.
