23. Sato-cho Monument

 Sato-cho Monument

The men of Kawauchi Village
Sent to labor service in Zaimoku-cho.
Over two hundred fifty of them were instantly killed,
Without even opening their lunch boxes.
Even now,
The chief priest recites a sutra for them
Every morning.

Explanation

Volunteers Corps members from Sato-cho, Saeki-gun, were killed while engaging in demolition work of buildings and houses. Since the work site was close to Seigan-ji Temple, the monument was built in the precinct of the temple. Then, a new monument was built on the Honkawa River green belt in the Peace Memorial Park for the convenience of the bereaved families and relatives.
