33. Danbara Townspeople Monument

Danbara Townspeople Monument

No matter how many seasons I might spend,
I would never forget the colors of the flames of that day.
With 800 Buddhist names of the dead put inside,
The monument
Looks like the clouds of that day.

Explanation

Danbara Townspeople Monument

The Danbara area has a 80-meter-high mountain, called Hijiyama, which blocked the shockwave caused by the blast of the A-bomb and subsequent fires. Thanks to this mountain, this area escaped heavy damage.
Shortly after the A-bombing, however, this area was thrown into the confusion of relief activities, with innumerable victims fleeing to it.
Beside this monument there stands a monument of a Tanka poem by Yasuo Yamamoto. The poem reads:

Full many a life
Was lost in the A-bombing.
The heartbreaking sorrow for them
Never leaves us,
Seeming like just yesterday.

Location: Danbara-ohata-cho, Minami-ku
