Body-Part 2-

1. A-bombed Parasol Tree

A-bombed Parasol Tree

As morning dew nurtures young leaves,
As brooks nurture fireflies,
My memories nurture what I am.
I shall never forget that day.
Let that day be a warning bell for living.

Explanation

The parasol tree was A-bombed in the courtyard of the Hiroshima Postal Service, the current Japan Post Chugoku Branch, 1.3 km from the hypocenter. The tree was burned and gouged by the blast and the heat. However, it survived, covering its scars. In May, 1973, the tree was replanted on the north side of the east wing of the Peace Memorial Museum.

Its seeds have been taken back to towns in and out of Japan by tourists and students who visit Hiroshima to study. Second generations of the tree have grown all over, which contribute as symbols against war and nuclear weapons, and for peace and life. Indeed, they play the role of peaceful diplomacy and international peace.

A-bombed Parasol Tree

On September 7, 2004, when Typhoon #18 attacked Hiroshima, the tree was pulled out by the roots. But it was restored the next day. An A-bombed Parasol Tree Peace Concert involving children is held every August 6, near where the tree stands.

Location : Peace Memorial Park, Naka-ku
