45. Hiroshima Medical Doctors Association Monument
A patient with broken ribs,
You ripped up a curtain and made a bandage.
And then,
You took care of the wounded one after another.
That was
The spirit of Florence Nightingale.
Explanation
This is the quote taken from the Hiroshima City Medical Association' s text.
“During WWII, health professionals were prohibited by the government from evacuating the city. The number of health professionals in the city on duty was 2,370, including 298 doctors. In total 2,168, medical personnel were believed to have been exposed to the A-bombing. Two hundred twenty-five doctors and 178 staff of the association died as a result of the Atomic-bombing.”
The monument is 12 m high and 4.5 m wide, built facing the A-bomb Dome. The abstract work of hands expresses love and relief. The two doves between the fingers represent peace messengers. The folded hands represent prayers for the souls of the victims and a strong desire for world peace.
