17. Eba Townspeople Monument

 Eba Townspeople Monument

At the foot of the deep-green Sarayama Hill,
There were people who harvested the sea.
There were people who saved many A-bomb victims.
Yet, those who helped also died from the bombing.
The kind townspeople inscribed those names,
Praying for peace.

Explanation

 Eba Townspeople Monument

At first the monument was built to remember the Eba townspeople killed in the A-bombing. As time went by, voices arose that the war dead should be also dedicated together in this monument.

Presently, this monument appears to be for the war dead. On the back inscribed are the names of those who died in the “Japan-China Incident (Sino-Japanese War) and Great East Asia War (Pacific War).” The earlier monument for the A-bomb victims (the illustration) is now under this ground, they say.
