The former Hiroshima University was located 1.5 km from the hypocenter. It was destroyed by the wind blast except for the reinforced structures, including the main building, library and the attached National Elementary School. Three rooms on the first floor of the main building were saved, thanks to fire-fighting efforts.
The damage to humans is not clear, but it is known that three students from Southeast Asia were among the dead.
After the war, the university made a fresh start under the new system as Hiroshima University.
