Merciful Mother Statue

“I will help you with your homework of Senninbari.”
I sent you
To the demolition work,
That was all I could do
As a mother.

*Senninbari:a soldier' s good-luck belt with a thousand stitches embroidered by a thousand women

A haiku poem by Jitoku Matsuno (1900-1975) is inscribed on the pedestal, which reads:

The statue of merciful mother
Lets peace messenger doves fly
With care.

Merciful Mother Statue

Jitoku studied Southern Chinese landscape painting at the Ueno Art School. He won the first Exhibition sponsored by the Japanese Art Society and was an associate member of the Southern Chinese Landscape Painting Society. He started a haiku poem magazine, Saikachi, in 1923, and served as chief priest at Saizenji Temple in Maebashi City.
