35. Hiroshima Central Broadcasting Station (NHK) Monument

Hiroshima Central Broadcasting Station (NHK) Monument

That morning
A man broadcast an “all clear signal.”
Some people waited their turns for repair,
Their precious radios in their arms.
The number of people
Who fell under the pale flash
Has not been known yet.

Explanation

Hiroshima Central Broadcasting Station (NHK) Monument

An explanation panel as follows was put up beside the monument in 2005.

Commitment to Peace—Monument for the A-bombed Broadcasting Station
The first NHK Hiroshima Broadcasting Station was located about 1.1 km from the hypocenter in Kami Nagarekawa-cho, presently at 3-30 Nobori-machi. On August 6, 1945, the Central Broadcasting Station was destroyed by the A-bombing, but restored by the autumn next year. NHK moved to the present location in Ote-machi in 1960, but the old A-bombed building was used as the Nobori-machi Branch of Fukuya Department Store until it was taken down in 1997 due to aging.

Location: Ote-machi, Naka-ku
